The Submerged Tire Removal Project

We think life insurance should be accessible.
So we've created an app to make it easier.

Submerged Tire Removal Project (Osborne Reef)

The Osborne Reef tire artifical reef was approved in 1974.  This initiative has received environmental permits from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) to remove the tires submerged on the Florida Reef Tract, place corals growing on the tires into the SFAEP maintained coral nursery, and to place uniquely designed swinging coral nursery trees at locations off Dania Beach and Lauderdale-by-the-Sea (LBTS). Onshore coral propagation/cultivation/rescue raceway tanks are also being installed at Fort Lauderdale’s new Reef Discovery Center (www.ReefCenter.org), and LBTS has also granted SFAEP permission to use their former Biorock Reef infrastructure for our Community Coral Nursery Program. This program is intended to be open to all and provide significant public outreach about our coral reefs.

 Community Oyster Gardening

The Community Oyster Gardening Program (https://www.facebook.com/groups/593501021847623) is now receiving volunteer-transported weekly loads of shucked oyster shells from Southport Raw Bar (www.southportrawbar.com) and drying them at a designated area within Port Everglades; and we will soon be scheduling oyster cultch bagging events and providing free oyster cultch bags for coastal property owners to hang from their seawalls and docks. We are also working with the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) to GIS map the distribution of Eastern oyster beds in Broward and Miami-Dade Counties, and the Florida Keys. This program is also intended to be open to all and provide significant public outreach about our oyster reefs.
